We live our lives in chains and never even know we have the key

I was doing some deep thinking on the drive home from work tonight about how we are often our own worst enemy. If something is not going right for you in your career, finances, health, or relationships chances are you are a big part of the equation and the only part you can control. You are what stands between you and the results you desire.

The Eagles song already gone is a well written classic about moving on from a bad relationship and moving on with life. Feels like I could have written the lyrics myself with my recent experiences and you know you have stumbled onto a great song when that happens.

Well I know it wasn’t you who held me down
Heaven knows it wasn’t you who set me free
So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains
And we never even know we have the key

— Eagles, Already Gone

Think about those lyrics. No one can hold you down and keep you down unless you give them that power. Only you can set you free and break out from undesirable situations and start to build the life you want to build.

Do you have a job you don’t like?  Build a plan to get free and get started, with small steps if necessary.

Do you have a relationship that is no longer working for you? Commit to giving it a final try or ending it if it is a hopeless situation.

Do you have a family member you are estranged from and waiting for them to make the first move? Be the bigger person and make the first move towards repairing the relationship.

Do you need to change your eating habits or take action to improve your health? Only you can commit to making the changes necessary to get it done.

Deciding to commit to a change is the first important step to making that change a reality. Don’t let yourself live in chains you already have the key. It’s up to you to sing the victory song.
